Port Orange

While waiting for his army discharge after the Civil War, John Milton Hawks teamed with a couple of other officers with a scheme to colonize in Florida with black freedmen. Under a homestead act specifically designed for them, they attempted to colonize on an 1804 Spanish land grant along the Halifax River north of Spruce Creek. He named the colony Port Orange. Unfortunately, due to faulty planning and harsh living conditions, of nearly 1600 settlers recruited in 1865 - only 9 remained on the land in 1868. Still some stayed and others arrived and there was slow but steady growth from 1870 until 1913 when it was incorporated as a town. Boat building, citrus farming, oystering and fishing sustained the town. Named a city in 1925 the population only grew to 3800 by 1970 and in the year 2000, over 50,000. This growth is due to one of the strongest residential and commercial markets in the county.

The approximately 25 square miles of Port Orange spans a multitude of housing and commercial levels. From affordable housing to apartments, townhomes, condominiums and upscale luxury developments, the choice is as broad as the demand.

Port Orange's aggressive commercial and industrial development policies have resulted in broad shopping and professional facilities along the major roadways with quiet, easy commute neighborhoods away from the bustle.
