Edgewater, Florida

An Intracoastal Waterfront Community

Pictured above:  the mural located at Kennedy Park portrays Edgewater when it was originally founded as Hawks Park.  Kennedy Park is located at Riverside Drive and East Park Avenue.

Edgewater.....Exactly Where You Want To Be!
Edgewater boasts a beautiful riverfront shoreline which stretches for mile after scenic mile.  Did you know the City offers three waterfront parks for residents and visitors to enjoy?  Check out the
City's parks, along with plenty of pictures.

Edgewater, Florida is a community nestled alongside the Indian River.  It's an Intracoastal waterfront village that offers all the charm you would expect to find in small town Florida.  But there is something more.  This is a place where one can enjoy all the comforts of home within a stone's throw of the best boating and fishing in the state, yet still engage in spirited business and commercial activity.  This is Edgewater.....exactly where you want to be!

Oak Hill, Florida

Undiscovered Tranquility

The City of Oak Hill is the southern most city in Southeast Volusia County and is the least developed of the three communities, comprising 10.5 square miles and a population of 1,200.

Named for its abundance of trees, the city lies along the beautiful Indian River. The town is rich in history, bird life and subtropical flora. Citrus groves were planted beginning in 1865, and commercial fishing began in 1908.

The beauty and charm of the Oak Hill community is enhanced by lovely 19th century homes. Incorporated in 1963, Oak Hill’s form of government is  Mayor  Commission, with each commissioner functioning as head of a municipal department.

Current information has it that a settler by the name of Mitchell built a home and attempted the establishment of an orange grove in 1860. His activity attracted a few additional people. Apparently someone had developed a salt works as there were reports of two shallow draft Union boats that raided and destroyed such a property in 1862. An influential black freedman reportedly donated land for a post office and church / school in which both black and white youngsters were taught six white in the mornings and 5 black in the afternoon. A post office opened in 1876 and by 1880 there were 2 stores and 2 hotels, the Atlantic House and the Seaview Hotel. Unfortunately, the Seaview survived only a year. It was thought that guiding guests from the north to active fishing holes was a major form of occupation. In 1901, it was rumored that the Florida East Coast Commercial Company had been formed to establish a large sugarcane processing plant and sawmill in Oak Hill.

Oak Hill lived by fishing the river and growing citrus crops.  Recent restrictions in the use of nets all but destroyed the local fishing industry with but a few surviving with cast nets. Oak Hill's limited commercial base from enterprise along US 1, automobile service and a small swimming pool manufacturer barely supports the small community. Today it's "bedroom" city with commuting north and south the norm.

Oak Hill is located South of New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater, and borders the Canaveral National Seashore, and is close to the Kennedy Space Center.
